Hi Midja. I was admitted in August last year and have been working at a big law firm since. I’m struggling with managing my workload between various cases. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and am looking for advice on managing my time better and avoiding burnout. Thanks!!

Congratulations on your graduation and the new role! This is the perfect time to set up effective practices and habits for your career. Here are some strategies that you can implement straight away in your role:

✅ Plan your week every week before the week begins. Identify the most important tasks that need to be completed. Focus on high-priority items first – big rocks first then the pebbles.

✅ Chunk down your big tasks. Break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. This can make it easier to tackle them and track your progress. For example, when I’m writing a book, I focus on writing 1500 words every week – small steps towards a large daunting goal.

✅ Be realistic with your deadlines and your promises. Avoid overcommitting yourself and allow for buffer time in case unexpected issues arise.

✅ Learn to delegate effectively. I can’t stress this enough! It’s such an important skill and one that most leaders still struggle with in their career. Identify tasks that can be outsourced or shared with colleagues or your support staff, to manage your workload and free up time for more valuable tasks.

✅ Take regular breaks to recharge. Schedule short breaks throughout the day to rest and recharge. Stepping away from your work for a few minutes can help improve focus and prevent burnout. Stand up, stretch, get some sunshine if you can. It will make all the difference.

✅ And finally, take care of yourself and put yourself first, so you can show up and do your very best work. Make time for activities outside of work that help you relax and recharge. Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial for managing stress and preventing burnout.

Wising you all the best in the new role, you’ve got this!
