Hi Midj, have been loving these lifelines and I’m keen to hear your thoughts on this. I have just changed jobs, same role however it feels like I’m going from one extreme from another. In my prior role, I had no supervision, support or leadership from my higher ups. I was left alone often and as I’m early in my career and am not 100% sure I’m doing the right thing, this was incredibly stressful. Now I’ve changed roles and my new manager seems to know everything I do, and people have told me that she has eyes everywhere. The culture and workload is definitely better here, but I’d love to hear how to manage this adjustment and find my confidence in this new environment.

So glad to hear that you’re enjoying the lifelines and congratulations on the new role! Transitioning from one extreme work environment to another can be challenging. Everything can feel unfamiliar and uncertain, and your confidence can take a dip as you try and re-adjust. This is totally normal and it’s a great time to do a personal reset.

Here are some strategies I suggest you implement to help you manage this adjustment and regain your confidence in your new workplace:

Open Communication with Your Manager

Schedule regular one-on-one meetings with your new manager (if this isn’t happening already) to discuss your progress, seek feedback, and address any concerns or uncertainties you may have. Be transparent about your previous experiences and how they have shaped your expectations. Ask for guidance and support in navigating your new role. Establishing open communication early on can help build trust and rapport with your manager.

Seek Mentorship

Look for opportunities to connect with experienced colleagues or mentors within your new organisation. They can provide valuable insights, advice, and support as you acclimate to your new environment. Building relationships with peers who have successfully navigated similar challenges can offer perspective and encouragement, helping you regain your confidence.

Set Realistic Expectations

Recognise that adjusting to a new work environment takes time and patience. Be kind to yourself and avoid placing undue pressure on achieving perfection immediately. Break down your tasks into manageable goals and prioritise them based on importance. Celebrate small wins along the way! Setting realistic expectations can alleviate feelings of overwhelm and boost your confidence as you gradually adapt to your new role.

Proactively Seek Feedback

Actively seek feedback from colleagues, peers, and stakeholders to gain insight into your performance and areas for improvement. Demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow. Use the feedback to refine your skills in the new work environment and enhance your effectiveness. Proactively seeking feedback demonstrates initiative and a commitment to continuing improving.

I’m sure these strategies will help you navigate the transition to your new role with confidence. Please keep my updated on the new gig – what an exciting time for you!
